Each wireless network has an identifier that devices like phones or computers use to find your Wi-Fi network. This is known as the Service Set Identifier (SSID), often referred to as the Wi-Fi network name.
When your SSID is broadcasting regularly, you can find it from the rundown of Wi-Fi networks on your phone/computer, type the password, and get connected. To enhance the security of your network, you may want to try to hide your router’s SSID.
How to hide your Wi-Fi router
Note: AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 Router is used as an example.
Before you start, make sure you connect your device (phone/computer) to the router’s Wi-Fi network.
1. Launch a web browser, enter http://re.rockspace.local in the address bar, and log in.
2. Go to Wireless > Basic, choose the 2.4GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi you want to hide. Tick Hide and tap Apply.
If your Wi-Fi network’s name (SSID) is hidden, you need to manually enter the Wi-Fi network name. You’ll also need to know the Wi-Fi security type (WEP, WPA, WPA2 or WPA3) and password.
Remember that though concealing your SSID adds an extra layer to prevent would-be Wi-Fi poachers, it is not always a successful safety measure. It will forestall those who know little about Wi-Fi to connect with your network, however very little else.
